Forrester Report: How to Build High-Performance Mobile Apps

The Mobile Application Development Playbook

Download a new mobile app. You are almost certain to find a creative, eye-popping interface.  That’s where the innovation so often lies, on the visual surface. But an app’s performance, not so much its interface, is the vital ingredient in user satisfaction. It’s what keeps the app in use, instead of being abandoned or deleted altogether.

Yet, as much as performance is a key pillar of mobile quality, the only time performance drives conversation is when it’s poor. A recent report from Forrester Research points to one reason for poorly performing mobile apps: Half of North American and European mobile developers never use performance testing tools.

Based on interviews with nine mobile vendors and service providers, the report “Building high-performance mobile experiences” dives into the problem areas that impede mobile performance, and provides guidance on this not-so-black-and-white area of quality.

Key takeaways:

  • Engaging mobile experiences are half user interface, half performance. If one fails, any amount of success in the other is lost.
  • Too many mobile teams ship code with “good enough” performance. But mobile consumers often don’t allow developers second chances.
  • Complexity hurts performance. Simplicity of architecture and experience is mandatory to delivering great mobile performance.
  • Offline support drives amazing performance. Engineering client-side caching solutions for offline usage can be challenging, but the performance benefits are almost always worth it.
