For IT operations management teams who must manage data and application hosting, workload optimization, or the handling of resources for application development and infrastructure, the cloud is a popular option. But not every IT Ops organization was “born on the cloud.” Taking advantage of cloud resources is not straightforward for IT Ops organizations in established businesses, where legacy, on-premises infrastructure may be better understood.

Moving legacy application and data stores to more abundant space on the cloud, for example, can present daunting challenges and choices. Should you use a public cloud, a private cloud, or some combination? How do you know what to move, and where? And how do you think through the many choices that a move to the cloud represents?

If you’re facing these kinds of challenges as you explore cloud and hybrid cloud possibilities,  you’re not alone. TechBeacon Learn has launched a new Hybrid cloud management video track to help you get started on the path to a cloud implementation that’s right for your business.

Presented by cloud expert David Linthicum, the series takes you through the basic steps in planning, building, and managing a public/private cloud implementation.

Hybrid cloud basics and use cases

To begin with, you need to understand the basic components of a hybrid cloud. What are the pros and cons of this approach to cloud computing? And what does a “multi cloud” do for you? These features of a hybrid cloud help you accomplish all the things you would do in traditional on-premises environments. The advantage is far greater flexibility—i.e., elasticity in how you provision resources for the essential systems that run a business, or for new systems your dev and test teams need to experiment with.

But what, exactly, do you do with all this flexibility? How do you apply the cloud in the enterprise, to make it work for the business? Learn how you can use hybrid clouds to host data and applications, including for dev and test environments and distributed applications. And understand the business reasons for the hybrid cloud investment, including integration of previously siloed data across business units and the ability to influence outcomes across the business.

Planning and building a hybrid cloud

Any team considering a move to a hybrid cloud environment must carefully plan for the phases and dependencies in the process. Teams need to know how to assess requirements, including who is going to leverage hosted data and applications, and what governance that will require. Knowing what investments are right for your organization in both private and public cloud environments will make your first implementation more efficient.

When it’s time to start building, you'll need to work with the requirements defined during the planning stage, and understand the essential processes and components of the build.

Next up: Hybrid cloud ops and app migration

TechBeacon Learn will continue the hybrid cloud management series with more videos covering the essential components of hybrid cloud operations. For example, how do you interact with the teams that rely on the resources your hybrid cloud provides?

Finally, we'll cover application migration, one of the most common reasons for adopting a hybrid cloud paradigm. Once your hybrid cloud is ready for operations, how do you know what applications to migrate to the new environment? And what is the migration process? David Linthicum provides the answers.
